View an Historic Space… Madison Square Garden II
Yes, Madison Square Garden…the sequel. Few know that NYC is on its fourth Madison Square Garden; however, like sequels to movies, the current version remains without a number.
The photos above are from Madison Square Garden II, which was designed in 1890 by architect Stanford White who not only kept an apartment in the building but was also murdered in it’s rooftop restaurant by millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw over an affair with Thaw’s wife.
MSG the second was built by syndicate that included J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, P.T. Barnum and W.W. Astor at a cost of $3 million. At the time it was claimed to be one of the great institutions of New York (according to the NY Times). Despite its historic importance, the doors to MSG II were closed in 1925.
